Urban Sprawl Threatens Open Spaces
SPNI released its annual report on open spaces and this year it has highlighted how planning procedures are kept from the public in order to circumvent environmental regulations. The lack of transparency in planning procedures occurs in multiple Ministries. The Agriculture Ministry has a committee that makes recommendations for the creation of agricultural land, but does not have any type of public representatives. This committee frequently recommends land that is harmful to other green areas. The Israel Lands Administration and the Tourism Ministry have a shared committee that squanders open green spaces. The Interior Ministry’s planning administration is attempting to modify Master Plan 35, which would allow them to expand the allowed areas for construction.
