Bird Lovers Take Pains to Save Species that Nests on the Ground

The collared pratincole is an endangered species of bird that can be found in Israel.  Hundreds of these birds lived in northern Israel.  Increasing agricultural activities have caused there to only be a handful of collared pratincoles left.  When threatened the chicks freeze in place hoping that any the danger will pass by them, however this leads to the chicks being run over by tractors that are unable to see these birds hiding in the crops.  Farmers in the Hula Valley are working with ornithologists to try and save these birds.  One initiative this year was for farmers to harvest their alfalfa earlier in the season while volunteers monitored the chicks to prevent them from running into the alfalfa fields.Advanced paragraph
