Regulating Israel's Fisheries in 2015
As the year comes to an end, the Agriculture Ministry says it will impose tighter restrictions on Israel's fishing industry in 2015. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, has been working for years to see more robust regulations of the Israeli fishing industry. SPNI's Fish Responsibly campaign has called attention to the decline in the Mediterranean's fish stocks and the damage created by commercial trawlers, which drag nets across the seas bed that illegally catch and kill as many as 100,000 protected sea creatures each year.
As the Agriculture Ministry takes a step in the right direction, alerting fishermen to changes in regulation in 2015, SPNI will push for mandatory regulations and better enforcement for Israel's fisheries in 2015.
