Rare Bats Disappearing From Upper Galilee Cave
Bat populations in the Alma Cave have been rapidly decreasing over the past years. The numbers that were in the thousands a decade ago but now are just a few dozen. The bats in these caves are vital in protecting crops from insects. It is currently unknown as to why the bats are disappearing but the most prominent theory is tourists are disturbing the habitats of the bats. Hikers can disturb the bats during their fragile hibernation state or during their breeding periods.
