Preserving Mount Eldad
A new community has illegally established itself on Mount Eldad, between Sde Boker and Mitzpeh Ramon. Such new communities have a broad effect on the surrounding region. The community was established without the proper permits and the Ramat HaNegev Regional Council is now seeking to have it evacuated. Although this type of development may seem benign, the necessities of infrastructure and municipal services such as water, electricity, roads and garbage removal all cause disturbances in this natural area. The movement of people and goods also effects the habitat and wildlife.
SPNI hopes to promote the integration of natural spaces and sustainable development in established desert communities such as Sde Boker, Mitzpe Ramon and Yeruham, as well as larger cities like Be'er Sheva and Arad. By focusing attention and resources on existing cities, we will raise the quality of life in urban centers that suffer from neglect and poverty strengthening these communities.
