Man-made Lake in Rishon Letzion Becomes Bird Habitat
Rishon Letzion has a rainwater reservoir next to an amusement park. This reservoir, known as Lake Superland, has been taken over by mother nature and is now home to a variety of species. These species include commonly found birds such as seagulls and much rarer birds such as the ferruginous duck. The vegetation in the lake provides a natural buffer from the nearby movie theater and amusement park. SPNI is looking to protect this habitat from additional development and requesting that the municipality declare Lake Superland as a nature reserve. Although the municipality has not promised anything, it has halted construction in the area and Mayor Dov Tzur visited the lake.
