Jerusalem Court to decide fate of oil shale

SPNI eagerly awaits a decision regarding the fate of the Elah Valley

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel is waiting for the decision from the Jerusalem Planning and Building Committee regarding the fate of the Elah Valley. Israel Energy Initiatives (IEI) is seeking a pilot license to test the viability of drilling the oil shale in the region.

The pilot is not likely to produce results that would actually reflect conditions of commercial producation. The method for extracting petroleum from the shale is an in-situ thermal method (heating the shale to very hot layers to produce oil) which has never before been used for commercial production anywhere in the world. There are also various questions regarding how drilling will effect the regional aquifer beneath the shale layer.
