Jerusalem District Committee Rejects Shfela basin Oil Shale Pilot Project

SPNI praises the decision to preserve the Elah Valley

Terminating a years long saga, the Jerusalem District Committee for Planning and Building voted to reject the Shfela basin oil shale pilot drilling project.

The pilot license was requested by Israel Energy Initiatives (IEI), which was seeking to extract oil from the shale rock layer beneath the Elah Valley. 

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) supported the decision, saying that the project was veiled in secrecy and too little was known about the process to be sure of environmental risks, among them the aquifer beneath the shale.
