Comprehensive Report Reveals Flaws in Eilat Railway Project
With the cooperation of professors and experts from across the country, SPNI has released a report detailing the economic, social and environmental damage that the proposed Eilat Railway project presents. The expensive project is not likely to have the economic advantages that it is meant to create. In addition, the project may have unforeseen consequences for Israel's international relations.
The report also details the environmental effects of the project. The plans currently have the rail lines cutting through six (6) nature reserves. The necessary infrastructure and movement will damage the habitats and wildlife across the Negev. The railway is also intended to increase shipping in the Gulf of Eilat which will negatively impact the coral reef and the marine life.
