Beautiful? No, But Still Essential

SPNI aims to protect open spaces including those that are not always beautiful. The scrublands of Israel are not always the most gorgeous locations but they still provide a necessary habitat for many native species.  Construction and mining are causing these lands to quickly disappear.  Other factors that are damaging the scrublands are military drills, tourists, vehicle traffic, and a lack of grazing.  Another major threat to the scrublands is the planting of forests nearby.  The flora and fauna of scrublands have spent thousands of years evolving to that environment.  The insertion of a forest onto scrublands can disrupt the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
